The easy, and wrong, takeaway is to treat this as just a supply chain problem that a better vendor questionnaire would have fixed. The headline is about the third-party exploit, but the lesson is about the system that allowed it to work.

The breach succeeded because a pathway existed from the vendor’s environment into the DGFiP’s databases. The real failure mode is usually that boring. It’s not about the vendor’s mistake; it’s about the implicit trust and lack of verification on the primary system.

A Practitioner’s View

This is where the story gets more useful. Forget the generic advice about “robust third-party risk management.” That sounds simple, but it’s where security programs break. The dashboard is not the control.

  • Could they sever the connection? If your team discovered this activity in progress, is there a clear, practiced plan to kill the vendor’s access immediately? Who makes that call at 2 AM?

This is less about panic and more about verification. Your vendor contract might say all the right things, but the question is whether the team can prove what happened on their side of the firewall.

The signal to watch isn’t whether attackers repeat this tactic. They will. The real test is whether you can use this story to validate your own controls.

Use this as a prompt. Pick a critical vendor that has access to your data. Can you show, with logs, exactly what data they’ve accessed in the last 24 hours? Do you know who on your team has the authority and ability to shut that access off in the next ten minutes?

If the answer is no, that’s the next thing to fix.
